Conversation with Ben Woodward, MURP 2024
How was your Rowan experience?
Ben: When I finished my undergraduate studies at Rider University, I only knew two things deep down—I wanted to run one more year of collegiate cross country and track and field and earn my master’s degree. I chose Rowan’s M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning Program and a certificate of graduate studies in Geospatial Science and Methods because it provided me an opportunity to live out my two goals and complement my previous education in Environmental Science and Sustainability Studies. I didn’t entirely know what I was getting myself into at the time, but I have no regrets about the decision I made. My two years at Rowan gifted me with lifelong friends, mentors, working and research opportunities, and helped me narrow down my future professional endeavors!
What was your experience with the Community Planning + Visualization Lab?
Ben: I met Dr. Meenar during my first semester at Rowan in his Community Planning + Site Design course. Being studious and curious about research opportunities on campus, it didn’t take me long to find an opportunity as one of Dr. Meenar’s graduate research assistants in his lab. During my time with Dr. Meenar, I was able to work on a wide array of research projects (EMoGI, CASH-MAP, GrEEEn) doing various tasks that helped me refine skills in technical writing, grant writing, community engagement, GIS mapping, quantitative/qualitative data analysis, and more! I was very pleased to leave Rowan with co-authoring an academic paper (under review) and facilitating focus groups and events with real-life residents in Camden City, NJ. I also would like to thank Dr. Meenar for his advice and guidance over the past two years, and for being one of the best mentors ever!
Where do you see yourself in the near future?
Ben: During my time at Rowan, I envisioned myself becoming a professional planner one day. I would like to work at the municipal level for a few years or so and eventually make my way into city planning. I have a newfound love for urban green spaces and open space projects. The start of my career may not begin in those project areas, however, starting out as an Assistant Planner in Atlantic County may open some doors to get to where I want to in the future! If planning doesn’t work out, then I will attempt to become a pseudo-famous saxophone player or join a metal band and scream to my heart’s content!
What interests/hobbies do you have?
Ben: My interests and hobbies are always evolving. The major ones that have been consistent throughout my life are a passion for running, playing/ listening to music, reading and journaling, watching copious amounts of anime, and occasionally gaming. I love live music and recently discovered a new liking to bar karaoke nights! I also love spending time with my family, our pets, and quality time with friends! One day when I’m making “beaucoup bucks,” I want to keep traveling around the US and the world.
